The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?

John B. Priestley (English writer and journalist)

Snowshoeing and winter hiking is the quintessential winter nature experience for all those who love to get out into the fresh air in a white landscape away from the slopes and cross-country ski trails. With modern snowshoes that prevent you from sinking into the deep snow, you can enjoy the silence and seclusion as you trudge through the snow. Rustic huts with regional specialties await you as a reward. Far away from the crowds, experienced mountain hikers and hobby walkers alike can enjoy high alpine experiences that will delight everyone. Step by step, winter sports enthusiasts hike across the idyllic alpine winter landscape.

Recommended equipment for carefree snowshoe and winter hiking:

  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 2 to 3 layers of outerwear / warm, functional, waterproof and windproof
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses and/or ski goggles, sun cream
  • Sturdy, waterproof winter boots
  • Gaiters up to the knees are an advantage, prevent snow from penetrating the boot
  • the rucksack should offer fastening options for the snowshoes

Highlights

  1. Snowshoe hiking and spa relaxation
  2. Peace and enjoyment at Lake Traunsee
  3. Overnight stay at the Rieder hut at the Höllengebirge

The course of your tour

Day 1: Individual arrival at the idyllic southern shore of Lake Traunsee to Ebensee

Travel to Ebensee by car or public transport.
During the cold season, the local mountain, the Feuerkogel, shows its best side: the beautiful high plateau is home to one of the most diverse ski areas and winter hiking areas in Austria.
Depending on the time of arrival, the “Ebenseer Kripperlroas” (until the beginning of February) is well worth a visit. “Kripperlroas” is the name of the tour from crib to crib, when you move from house to house.
You can see 8 large landscape nativity scenes and crips in private houses, the Catholic parish church and the nativity scene exhibition in the Ebensee Museum. The Nativity scene map will be available for you at the hotel. You will also receive all your travel documents at the hotel.

Day 2: Hike around the Langbath lakes

Take the Traunstein Taxi from the Hotel Post to the Vorderer Langbathsee. The start of the hike begins there.

Discover the magical winter landscape of the Salzkammergut on a leisurely hike around the idyllic Langbathsee lakes. Embedded in the snow-covered mountains, this tour offers an unforgettable nature experience - tranquil forests, glistening water and clear winter air make this excursion a real highlight. Ideal for nature lovers, those seeking peace and quiet and all those who want to enjoy winter in its most beautiful form.

Return journey by Traunstein taxi. The afternoon is at leisure.

Length: 7 km
Walking time: 2h
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 90m

Day 3: Bad Ischl - Hike around the Jainzen and Salzkammergut thermal spa

Take the train to Bad Ischl and you can store your bathing luggage with us, Salzkammergut Touristik.

Bad Ischl became a vacation destination of European standing in the middle of the 19th century when Emperor Franz Joseph began to spend his vacations in his summer residence in Ischl. Bad Ischl has been a spa town since 1906 - you can find leisure and relaxation in the spa gardens, the spacious thermal baths or by visiting the famous Café Zauner.

Start your exploration of the town with a circular walk around the Ischers' local mountain, the “Jainzen”.

Length: 6 km
Walking time: 1 h 45 min
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 260m

Take a break from sporting activities in the afternoon and visit the Eurotherme Bad Ischl (thermal spa). A place to immerse yourself ... in pure bathing pleasure. In the indoor brine pool and the exclusive brine whirlpool. The soothing power of salt and brine increase well-being and promote health.

The thermal spa is located right next to the train station. Return journey by train.

Day 4: Up to the Feuerkogel and through the Höllengebirge to the Rieder hut

After a short shuttle ride, the Feuerkogel cable car takes you up to 1,580 metres above sea level.

Here you strap on your snowshoes and set off through the mystical Höllengebirge mountains.

Passing individual mountain peaks and enjoying spectacular views in all directions, you will hike to the secluded Riederhütte.

Once there, warm yourself by the tiled stove and enjoy the unique location!

Length: 4,5 km
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 290m / 110hm

Day 6: Back into the valley and departure

After a hearty breakfast, you will set off back to the Feuerkogel along the same route as yesterday.

Take the cable car down into the valley and return to ‘civilisation’.

The shuttle will then take you back to the town centre.
