"High from the Dachstein, where the Aar still dwells ... this beautiful country is the Styrian country, is my dear, dear homeland..."

from the song: " High from the Dachstein" (Styrian national anthem) by Jakob Dirnböck (1809–1861), bookseller

The ‘Hohe Dachstein’, an Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997 and also the highest mountain in the Northern Limestone Alps, was once a barrier between the Enns Valley and the Salzkammergut to the north. The mountain massif is a strongly karstified mountain massif, characterized by sinkholes and caves. In the border area of the provinces of Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria, it is one of the most varied mountain groups of the Northern Limestone Alps. Many of its peaks are over 2,000 meters high, the Hohe Dachstein even measures 2,995 meters. Due to the alpine farming practiced there, the region above Filzmoos, south of the Dachstein Mountains, has a special character. Its heyday can be located at the time of the Middle Ages, which was coming to an end, because a short time later a small ice age began. In the north, the Dachstein area includes various lakes, such as Lake Hallstatt and the Gosau Lakes. In addition to the karst plateau, you will find all kinds of mountain landscapes, such as alpine pastures, romantic valleys, idyllic mountain lakes, bizarre caves and mountain pine-covered plateaus, as well as some glaciers.

There is a wide range of offers for mountain bikers. Varied uphill and downhill stages in attractive natural landscapes and altitudes of up to 2,000 meters make the biker's heart beat faster. Alpine innkeepers along the paths spoil their guests with local delicacies and thus ensure the perfect rounding off of unforgettable days on the mountain bike.

Itinerary

1. Day: Individual arrival in the biker stronghold of Bad Goisern

The pretty spa town with its outstanding geographical location on Lake Hallstatt attracts sports and mountain enthusiasts in summer and winter. Depending on the time of arrival, it is worth taking a leisurely excursion along the Traun using the Traunreiterweg to the district of Weißenbach to 'warm up'. From the Goiserer Bridge you are accompanied by the tireless murmur of the Traun to the Weißenbach Bridge. At the hotel in Bad Goisern you will receive your travel documents.
(1 night in Bad Goisern)

From Bad Goisern around the Grimming - easternmost pillar of the Dachstein Mountains

On the way to Gröbming, a variety of scenic highlights are touched. From Bad Goisern, the path leads uphill towards Styria. Along the Waldgraben-Scheibenmoos nature reserve, a small path leads to the Pflindsberg ruins with an observation tower, which offers a wonderful panoramic view over the Ausseerland. It is connected to the Salzkammergut via the Salzberg, where salt has been mined since 1147. The view of Mount Loser, which resembles a fortress, is impressive. The journey continues via Puchen and finally crosses the Altausseer Traun until Bad Aussee is reached. Via Kainisch and the Ödensee, where a refreshing swim is offered, a steep ascent to the Steinitzenalm, a cozy alpine hut in the middle of fantastic nature at about 1,000 meters above sea level, awaits. Via the Langmoosalm, the journey follows through the Almgraben in the direction of Bad Mitterndorf. The following section has everything a biker's heart desires: a lake, forest sections, rushing streams, alpine pastures and beautiful panoramas. From the Salza reservoir, the journey leads to the Miesboden through the Kemet Mountains. The Ritzingerhütte on the Viehbergalm is worth a stop. Soon an extremely exciting part of the tour begins: you bike down through the picturesque 'Öfen' to Gröbming in the Enns Valley, the next stage destination.

(1 night in Gröbming/Mitterberg).

~ 71 km, altitude difference ascent 1940 / descent 1690 m

3. Day: On the sunny south side of the Dachstein

The Dachstein circuit leads from Gröbming down to the Enns and flat to Weißenbach before it continues up to Ramsau am Dachstein. The path runs directly below Torstein, Mitterspitz and Hoher Dachstein. It crosses the high alpine pasture area of Ramsau, below the steep south faces of the impressive Dachstein massif. A wall about 1,000 meters high breaks off abruptly towards Ramsau and offers a dramatic sight. This rock formation is about 200 million years old and was formed in the calm waters of a tropical lagoon. The journey continues past the Neustattalmen in the direction of the Bachlalm. The fast-paced MTB route follows the Bachlalmweg into the picturesque Filzmoos, the center of summer and winter sports, originally a pure alpine pasture area and magnificently situated at the foot of the 2,458-meter-high "Große Bischofsmütze". The wildly rugged Gosaukamm is located in the west of the Dachstein and impresses with its boldly rock-shaped towers, needles and jagged peaks. Now it goes up to the Langeggsattel before the next stage town Annaberg in Salzburger Land comes into view.

(1 night in Annaberg).

~ 76 km, altitude difference ascent 2050 / descent 1900 m

4. Day: From the Tennengebirge to Lake Hallstatt

From Annaberg, follow the Lammer mountain stream. Now we head towards the Zwieselalm, where the Dachstein glacier is already approaching and can be viewed from the south side. A downhill route in the direction of Russbach raises the adrenaline level. Shortly after crossing the Gschütt Pass, you reach the Salzburg-Upper Austrian border and later the sunny alpine pastures of the Gosau Valley. From the Vorderer Gosausee, follow the Plassen circuit up to the Roßalm, where homemade delicacies are served. The Plassen is a striking elevation between the Gosau Valley and Hallstatt. The stretch blasted into the rock on the Waldbachleitn with several waterfalls at the Waldbach bridge, which is also part of the Salzkammergut Trophy, is spectacular. Now it goes down to Lake Hallstatt, which, flowed through by the Traun, lies in front of you like a fjord in a trough valley created by the glacier. Cycling along the lakeshore, Hallstatt is reached. With its uniquely picturesque townscape, it is one of the most attractively situated places in Austria. The fishermen's houses are densely packed on an alluvial cone of the Mühlbach, some even constructed as pile dwellings. From here you follow the shore road and reach the east side of the lake. The flank of the Sarstein plunges almost vertically into the lake here and the climbing system floating above the water gives the impression of floating above the water. On the way back to the starting point of the journey to Bad Goisern, you can once again enjoy wonderful views of King Dachstein.

(Luggage transfer to Bad Goisern and shower facilities in Bad Goisern)

~ 84 km, altitude difference ascent 2250 / descent 2620 m

Individual departure or additional nights.

In addition to cycling, Bad Goisern also offers other leisure activities, such as a visit to the thermal baths or countless hiking and walking trails. If your time does not allow you to spend more days of vacation here, it is now time to say goodbye and start your journey home again.
