Fronleichnam at Lake Traunsee

The Corpus Christi Feast at the Lake
tradition and culture trip
  • Fronleichnamsprozession at Traunsee
  • Welterbe Museum Hallstatt

The word Fronleichnam is derived from Old High German "Fron-lichnam" and means "body of the Lord." In Traunkirchen, Fronleichnam has been held as a lake procession since the second fire in 1632. One reason for this form of procession, besides the spatial problems, was the religious aspect, since it was important to bring the eucharist into the consciousness of the participants in a psychologically impressive and pedagogically effective way.
