The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?

John B. Priestley (English writer and journalist)

Snowshoeing and winter hiking is the quintessential winter nature experience for all those who love to get out into the fresh air in a white landscape away from the slopes and cross-country ski trails. With modern snowshoes that prevent you from sinking into the deep snow, you can enjoy the silence and seclusion as you trudge through the snow. Rustic huts with regional specialties await you as a reward. Far away from the crowds, experienced mountain hikers and hobby walkers alike can enjoy high alpine experiences that will delight everyone. Step by step, winter sports enthusiasts hike across the idyllic alpine winter landscape.

Recommended equipment for carefree snowshoe and winter hiking:

  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 2 to 3 layers of outerwear / warm, functional, waterproof and windproof
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses and/or ski goggles, sun cream
  • Sturdy, waterproof winter boots
  • Gaiters up to the knees are an advantage, prevent snow from penetrating the boot
  • the rucksack should offer fastening options for the snowshoes

Highlights

  1. Snowshoe hiking on the Feuerkogel
  2. Hallstatt with the fjord-like Lake Hallstatt and a visit to the salt mines
  3. Peace and enjoyment at Lake Traunsee
  4. Llama hiking - enjoy the landscape with the llamas at a leisurely pace
  5. Craftsmanship of the Salzkammergut with a tour of the Handwerkshaus Bad Goisern
  6. Culinary highlights at mountain huts and regional restaurants and cafés

The course of your tour

Day 1: Individual arrival at the idyllic southern shore of Lake Traunsee to Ebensee

Travel to Ebensee by car or public transport.
During the cold season, the local mountain, the Feuerkogel, shows its best side: the beautiful high plateau is home to one of the most diverse ski areas and winter hiking areas in Austria.
Depending on the time of arrival, it is worth visiting the Ebenseer Kripperlroas (until the beginning of February).
8 large landscape nativity scenes in private houses, the Catholic parish church and the interesting nativity scene exhibition in the Ebensee Museum. Nativity scene map available at the Ebensee tourist office.
You will receive your travel documents at the hotel.

Day 2: Feuerkogel - Snowshoeing on the high plateau

Take the winter shuttle to the Feuerkogel valley station. From there, the Feuerkogel cable car takes you up the mountain. The silence of the Feuerkogel high plateau and endless kilometers of untouched white splendor in front of you. A total of 5 snowshoe trails and a “taster trail” are available for snowshoe hikers on the Feuerkogel high plateau, with a total length of approx. 25 kilometers.

Enjoy an extended snowshoe tour in the glistening winter landscape with breathtaking views of Lake Traunsee and the Salzkammergut.

After the snowshoe tour, you will have well and truly earned a stop at one of the mountain inns and huts on the Feuerkogel (depending on opening times and rest days). A soup and a Kaiserschmarren pancake await you as a culinary highlight. Strengthened, you take the cable car back down to the valley and the shuttle back to the hotel.

Day 3: Bad Ischl - Hike around the Jainzen and Salzkammergut thermal spa

Take the train to Bad Ischl and you can store your bathing luggage with us, Salzkammergut Touristik.

Bad Ischl became a vacation destination of European standing in the middle of the 19th century when Emperor Franz Joseph began to spend his vacations in his summer residence in Ischl. Bad Ischl has been a spa town since 1906 - you can find leisure and relaxation in the spa gardens, the spacious thermal baths or by visiting the famous Café Zauner.
Start your exploration of the town with a circular walk around the Ischers' local mountain, the “Jainzen”.

From the train station, walk through the town center and turn left onto Rechensteg. You will soon reach Jainzendorfstraße with beautiful views of the Ischltal valley. Here you can shorten the circular route by around 30 minutes if you follow the asphalt road.
However, we recommend visiting the “Glücksplatz” at the Hohenzoller waterfall. The route now leads through a secluded valley with meadows and forest and finally along the original Jainzenbach stream back to Bad Ischl.

Length: 7 km (6 km without Hohenzoller waterfall)
Walking time: 2 h 15 min (1 h 45 min without Hohenzoller waterfall)
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 260m

Take a break from sporting activities in the afternoon and visit the Salzkammergut Therme Bad Ischl. A place to immerse yourself ... in pure bathing pleasure. In the indoor brine pool and the exclusive brine whirlpool. The soothing power of salt and brine increase well-being and promote health.

The thermal baths are located right next to the train station. Return journey by train

Day 4: Llama hike with lunch at the Kreh and free time

Travel by Traunstein Taxi from Hotel Post to Gasthof Kreh. The start of the llama hike begins there. Together with the llamas we hike to the front Langbathsee (approx. 2 hours). Depending on the customer's wishes and physical condition, you can also walk around the front Langbathsee. Then back to the Gasthof Kreh.

The inn in the Kreh is a traditional establishment where a stop for lunch is planned.
Günter and Karin will spoil you with home cooking (value voucher - lunch can be freely selected from the menu). Return journey by Traunstein cab. The afternoon is at leisure.

Day 5: Bad Goisern - Hiking on the Traunreiterweg, Hand.Werk.Haus, epicurer´s highlight

Arrival and departure by train.
If you want to hike as close to the water as possible, we recommend the Traunreiterweg in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt. The wide hiking and walking trail runs right next to the riverbed and is around 4 kilometers long, leading from the center of Goisern to the northern border of Bad Goisern.

Where does the name Traunreiter come from?
The Traunreiter existed from the 16th to the 19th century. They were salt boatmen who transported the salt extracted in Hallstatt on the Traun to the salt works in Ebensee. On the way back, the ships were loaded with grain, wine and other provisions and were pulled back to Hallstatt by horses, hence the name.

After the hike from the Bad Goisern Jodschwefelbad train stop to the town center, you can visit the HAND.WERK.HAUS - a center for contemporary craft culture. The store and the various exhibitions are housed in a former forester's house. In the store you have the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of handicraft products from the World Heritage region.

After the hike and tour, you can fortify yourself in the traditional Maislinger coffee house:
The Maislinger bakery combines Austrian coffee house tradition with delicious food from the in-house bakery or patisserie. Coffee specialties, homemade pastries, hot dishes and small snacks await you in this comfortably furnished café.

If you fancy a little adventure, we recommend a toboggan ride on the Trockentann toboggan run. From Bad Goisern center about 2 km on foot to the parking lot Nordisches Zentrum. This is where the ascent to the toboggan run begins. After an ascent of approx. 40 minutes on foot and overcoming 300 meters in altitude, you reach the cosy toboggan hut, which is open daily in the winter months and in good snow conditions.
Toboggans can be rented free of charge directly before the ascent to the Trockentann toboggan run at the toboggan run/Goiserer Hütte parking lot.

The Bad Goisern train station is approx. 2.5 km, approx. 30 minutes - return journey to Ebensee.

Day 6: Gmunden with Gmundner ceramics and hike up the Gmundnerberg

Travel by train to Gmunden - the crowning pearl of Lake Traunsee:
As the center of the salt trade, the town had a strategically important position: directly at the point where the Traun leaves the Traunsee and flows northwards. The prosperity of those times, when salt was shipped by water, can be seen today in the magnificent facades. A stroll through Gmunden is highly recommended.

Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur - Gmundner world of experience
Every product that comes out of the Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur is unique - made and painted by hand. It is the craftsmanship that makes the tableware so valuable and unique. The Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur offers an exciting program all year round. Those who would like to take a look behind the scenes can do so, for example, on a guided tour of the manufactory, which is offered all year round, whatever the weather (Mon - Sat at 10:30 and 13:00). In addition to a short film, some particularly valuable exhibits, a touch and photo station, guests are offered detailed insights into the creation of the unique Gmunden ceramics and the painting workshops.

After the independent tour of Gmunden and the guided tour of the Gmunden ceramics factory, the tour continues with the 522 bus from Gmunden Keramik to Altmünster.

From the Esplanade Altmünster, a beautiful circular route leads via the Berggasthof Urzn with fantastic views of the Traunstein and the surrounding mountains. Depending on the snow conditions, there is also a beautiful snowshoe hike up the Gmundnerberg.
Length: 9.5 km
Walking time: 3 h 15 min
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 390 m

We recommend a stop at Gasthof Urzn (please note that it is a REST DAY).
Hike back and once in the center of Altmünster take the bus or train back to Ebensee.

Day 7: UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt with salt mines and eastern shore hiking trail

Travel by train from Ebensee to Steeg-Gosau.

Here you start your hike on the Ostuferwanderweg along Lake Hallstatt - one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Salzkammergut. The easy adventure hike offers wonderful views and also some special highlights, e.g. the suspension bridge to the Wehrgraben - the deepest point of the lake at approx. 125 m deep.
Length: approx. 8 kilometers
Walking time: approx. 2 h - 2.30 h
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 35 m

You reach the Hallstatt train station - from there you take the ferry to the center of the World Heritage town of Hallstatt. After a tour of the historic town, you begin your visit to the Hallstatt Salt Mine (closed from 07.01. - 31.01.2025) - the oldest mine in the world. Ascent with the Salzbergbahn, guided tour of the mine, Skywalk (a 12-meter-long viewing platform) and descent with the cable car.

ALTERNATIVE when the Salzwelten are closed:
Dachstein Krippenstein Panorama Ticket from 1:00 pm
With the panorama ticket, winter hikers (snowshoe & winter boots) can take the Dachstein Krippenstein cable cars (sections 1-3) to the mountain summit and enjoy the enchanting winter landscape on a relaxed snow tour.

Return ferry from Hallstatt and train from Hallstatt to Ebensee.
(Alternatively, take a cab back to Obertraun and from Obertraun station back to Ebensee)
