The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?

John B. Priestley (English writer and journalist)

Snowshoeing and winter hiking is the quintessential winter nature experience for all those who love to get out into the fresh air in a white landscape away from the slopes and cross-country ski trails. With modern snowshoes that prevent you from sinking into the deep snow, you can enjoy the silence and seclusion as you trudge through the snow. Regional specialties await you as a reward. Far away from the crowds, experienced mountain hikers and hobby walkers alike can enjoy high alpine experiences that will delight everyone. Step by step, winter sports enthusiasts hike across the idyllic alpine winter landscape.

The course of your tour

Day 1: Individual arrival at the historic little town Bad Ischl

Travel to Bad Isch by car or public transport.
In Bad Ischl, connoisseurs can really enjoy themselves in winter: stroll leisurely through the alleys and shops, stop for a good meal in one of the many inns and restaurants, treat yourself to something sweet in a coffee house, discover traditional crafts and old traditions. You don't have to venture far from the town to find a wide range of winter sports on your doorstep. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, winter hiking – the mountains are close by. Winter days in this charming little town are delightfully varied.

Day 2: Bad Ischl - Hike around the Jainzen and a culinary highlight awaits you

Bad Ischl became a vacation destination of European standing in the middle of the 19th century when Emperor Franz Joseph began to spend his vacations in his summer residence in Ischl. Bad Ischl has been a spa town since 1906 - you can find leisure and relaxation in the spa gardens, the spacious thermal baths or by visiting the famous Café Zauner.

Start your exploration of the town with a circular walk around the local mountain of Ischl, the “Jainzen”.
Length: 6 km
Walking time: 1 h 45 min
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 260m

A hot beverage and a cake of your choice will be provided for you at the imperial and royal court confectioner Zauner.

In the afternoon, a break from sporting activities and a visit to the Eurotherme Bad Ischl is recommended (payment on site).

Day 3: Following the Salt trail to Bad Goisern and Hallstatt

The hike begins in Bad Ischl and leads along the picturesque Soleweg trail to Bad Goisern. Learn more about regional crafts at the Handwerkshaus in Bad Goisern. From there, the bus continues to Hallstatt, where there is time to visit the historic town center and the impressive backdrop of the lake. Afterwards, the ferry takes hikers to Hallstatt train station on the opposite side of the lake. From there, the train takes you along the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt back to Bad Ischl – a varied tour with beautiful views and cultural highlights.

Day 4: Feuerkogel - Snowshoeing on the high plateau

Take the train to Ebensee, then the winter shuttle to the Feuerkogel cable car valley station. From there, the Feuerkogel cable car will take you up the mountain. The silence of the high plateau and endless kilometers of untouched white splendor are impressive. For snowshoe hikers, there are 5 snowshoe trails and a “taster trail” on the Feuerkogel high plateau, with a total length of approx. 25 kilometers.

Enjoy an extended snowshoe tour in the glittering winter landscape with breathtaking views of Lake Traunsee and the Dachstein Glacier.

After the snowshoe tour, you will have earned a stop at one of the mountain inns on the Feuerkogel (depending on opening hours and closing days). A soup and Kaiserschmarren await you as culinary highlights. Refreshed, you will take the cable car back down to the valley, the shuttle back to the train station, and the train back to Bad Ischl.

Day 5: Individual departure or additional nights

If you have the opportunity to extend your stay, the repertoire of discoveries is far from exhausted and additional nights can be booked.

Recommended equipment for carefree snowshoe and winter hiking:

  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 2 to 3 layers of outerwear / warm, functional, waterproof and windproof
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses and/or ski goggles, sun cream
  • Sturdy, waterproof winter boots
  • Gaiters up to the knees are an advantage, prevent snow from penetrating the boot
  • the rucksack should offer fastening options for the snowshoes
