The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?

John B. Priestley (English writer and journalist)

Snowshoeing and winter hiking is the quintessential winter nature experience for all those who love to get out into the fresh air in a white landscape away from the slopes and cross-country ski trails. With modern snowshoes that prevent you from sinking into the deep snow, you can enjoy the silence and seclusion as you trudge through the snow. Rustic huts with regional specialties await you as a reward. Far away from the crowds, experienced mountain hikers and hobby walkers alike can enjoy high alpine experiences that will delight everyone. Step by step, winter sports enthusiasts hike across the idyllic alpine winter landscape.

  2. Peace and enjoyment at Lake Traunsee

The course of your tour

Day 1: Individual arrival at the idyllic southern shore of Lake Traunsee to Ebensee

Travel to Ebensee by car or public transport.
During the cold season, the local mountain, the Feuerkogel, shows its best side: the beautiful high plateau is home to one of the most diverse ski areas and winter hiking areas in Austria.
Depending on the time of arrival, the “Ebenseer Kripperlroas” (until the beginning of February) is well worth a visit. “Kripperlroas” is the name of the tour from crib to crib, when you move from house to house.
You can see 8 large landscape nativity scenes and crips in private houses, the Catholic parish church and the nativity scene exhibition in the Ebensee Museum. The Nativity scene map will be available for you at the hotel. You will also receive all your travel documents at the hotel.

Day 2: Feuerkogel - Snowshoeing on the high plateau

Take the winter shuttle to the Feuerkogel valley station. From there, the Feuerkogel cable car takes you up the mountain. The silence of the high plateau and endless kilometers of untouched white splendor in front of you. A total of 5 snowshoe trails and a “taster trail” are available for snowshoe hikers, with a total length of approx. 25 kilometers.

Enjoy an extended snowshoe tour in the glistening winter landscape with breathtaking views of Lake Traunsee and the Dachstein Glacier.

After the snowshoe tour, you will have well and truly earned a stop at one of the mountain inns and huts on the Feuerkogel (depending on opening times and rest days). A soup and a Kaiserschmarren pancake await you as a culinary highlight. Strengthened, you take the cable car back down to the valley and the shuttle back to the hotel.

Day 3: Bad Ischl - Hike around the Jainzen and a culinary highlight awaits you

Travel by train to Bad Ischl.

Bad Ischl became a vacation destination of European standing in the middle of the 19th century when Emperor Franz Joseph began to spend his vacations in his summer residence in Ischl. Bad Ischl has been a spa town since 1906 - you can find leisure and relaxation in the spa gardens, the spacious thermal baths or by visiting the famous Café Zauner.

Start your exploration of the town with a circular walk around the local mountain of Ischl, the “Jainzen”.
Length: 6 km
Walking time: 1 h 45 min
Altitude difference in ascent and descent: 260m

In Kaiser-Franz-Josef Straße, a culinary highlight awaits you in the Rührwerk - Schaubackstube with the Habsburger. Get the delicious tartlet with vanilla cream.

In the afternoon, a break from sporting activities and a visit to the Eurotherme Bad Ischl is recommended (payment on site).

Return journey by train to Ebensee.

Day 4: Gmunden with Gmundner ceramics and hike up to lake Laudachsee at Grünberg

Travel by public transport to Gmunden - the crowning pearl of Lake Traunsee:
As the center of the salt trade, the town had a strategically important position: directly at the point where the Traun leaves the Traunsee and flows northwards. The prosperity of those times, when salt was shipped by water, can be seen today in the magnificent facades.

Pick up by the Salzkammergut Shuttle from the center of Gmunden and drive to the starting point for the hike to Laudachsee.

Laudachsee nature reserve: The trail leads along a forest road to Laudachsee. The Laudachsee is the most popular excursion destination for hikers and mountaineers on the Grünberg. The mountain lake is located at an altitude of 894 meters on the way from Grünberg to Traunstein. Once you reach the lake, you can walk around it comfortably in around 40 minutes. The idyllic circular trail leads across meadows, paths and small bridges along the shores of the Laudachsees and invites you to take a relaxing stroll.

Afterwards, mountain fans of all ages can stop for refreshments at the Ramsaualm and enjoy the wonderful panorama of the Traunstein.
You can either return via the same route or via Radmoos.

Cab ride with the Salzkammergut Shuttle back to the center of Gmunden directly to the Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur. The guided tour of the manufactory is scheduled for 13:00.

The afternoon can be used for a walk through the center of Gmunden.
Return journey by public transport from Gmunden to Ebensee.

Day 5: Individual departure or additional nights

If you have the opportunity to extend your stay, the repertoire of discoveries is far from exhausted and additional nights can be booked.

Recommended equipment for carefree snowshoe and winter hiking:

  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 2 to 3 layers of outerwear / warm, functional, waterproof and windproof
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses and/or ski goggles, sun cream
  • Sturdy, waterproof winter boots
  • Gaiters up to the knees are an advantage, prevent snow from penetrating the boot
  • the rucksack should offer fastening options for the snowshoes
