Lake Gosau is the pocket mirror of the Dachstein, in which the old rogue of the evening, when the alpenglow paints his cheeks, looks at himself so smugly.

Peter Rosegger, Austrian writer and poet, 1843-1918

A true classic of the alpine high-altitude trails is the circular hike around the Gosaukamm in the Dachstein mountains. This is not least due to the varied landscape from wildly rugged rock to gentler grassy slopes, the cosy huts and the great view of the Salzkammergut and the massif of the Dachstein. The upper Gosau Valley, where the hike begins, with the surrounding high mountain regions, such as the jagged Gosaukamm, is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Dachstein Mountains. The region south of the Bischofsmütze, above Filzmoos, is also attractive. The historically grown alpine farming is still traditionally practiced today. Its heyday is associated with the Middle Ages, which was coming to an end, because the climatic conditions changed at that time to the detriment of the living conditions for the local population. The alpine pastures that lie along the path of the hut tour are worth visiting. The easy scramble is also appealing; it brings additional variety to this impressive multi-day tour.

Look forward to impressive alpine and mountain hikes through a magnificent high mountain and alpine landscape, complemented by culinary delights and delicacies of the region.

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Gosau

The Gosau Valley is one of the most magnificent mountain areas in the Northern Alps and experiences its brilliant conclusion with the two Gosau Lakes at the end of the valley. In 1997, this impressive region on the Dachstein was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. At the accommodation in Gosau you will receive your detailed travel documents.
(1 night in Gosau)

Day 2: Towards the sun

A varied hike is ahead of us today. It runs over scree gullies, mountain pine fields and into a rock basin with an impressive route.
Slightly ascending from the Vorderer Gosausee, the path leads past the unmanaged Scharwandhütte with chapel and on through Ahornkar and Eisgrube high up to the Steigl Pass. At 2,018 meters, this is the highest point and at the same time a wonderful place on today's tour. Here at the transition to Salzburg, you get quite close to the strikingly shaped Bischofsmütze. On the descent to the Hofpürglhütte, the view of the southern side of the Gosaukamm in the direction of Filzmoos and the Dachstein south face becomes clear. Partly the following section is secured by ropes and requires surefootedness; but the efforts are worth it, because the location of the desired hut, below the imposing peaks of the Great and Small Bischofsmütze in the western part of the Dachstein Mountains, is extremely promising.
(1 night at the Hofpürglhütte)
(Luggage and sleeping bag for the overnight stay at the Hofpürglhütte must be brought along!)
Hiking: 5-6 hours (approx. 9 km, ascent: 1,090 m/ descent: 320 m)

Day 3: Around the Bischofsmütze

After a hearty breakfast at sunrise, you can enjoy the view of the Hoher Dachstein. Around the most famous peak of the Gosaukamm, the Bischofsmütze, you now cross the Durchgangsscharte and come to the alpine pasture area of the rustic Stuhlalm. From the hut, visitors have a fantastic view of the northern escarpment of the Bischofsmütze, and the Tennengebirge, Großglockner and the Hohe Tauern can also be seen in good weather. In the further course of the route, we hike on a high-altitude path, initially over rough roots and later over the coarse scree of the mountain flanks, to a high montane beech forest. It is now only a short distance to the Gablonzer Hütter. Here you will be rewarded with the impressive panorama of Lake Gosau, Hoher Dachstein and Donnerkogel. From there, the descent takes place back to the starting point of the journey, to Gosau.
(1 night in Gosau)
Hiking: 5 hours (approx. 13 km, ascent: 290 m/ descent: 1,060 m)

Day 4: Individual departure or additional nights

For all those who want to spend even more time in the Inner Salzkammergut, additional nights can be reserved. For example, a visit to the Löckermoos is a good idea. A well-signposted path leads to the edge of the ceiling bog, which is unique in Austria.
Otherwise, the return journey will take place today.
