“The big challenge is to set off at all, to leave supposed security behind and instead to face the uncertainty of the way. The path then emerges by itself.”

Gregor Sieböck, Austrian world traveler and author

Crystal clear lakes, historic towns and picturesque villages - the idyllic Salzkammergut is probably one of the most scenic regions of the Alps. It is a unique part of Upper Austria, Salzburger Land and Styria due to the salt mining going back deep into history, which has had a lasting impact on the cultural area. These characteristics also convinced the Unesco Committee, which included the Hallstatt - Dachstein/Salzkammergut region in the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites in 1997. During the bike tour, the impressive landscape, a combination of lakes and mountains, can be enjoyed from the saddle. The trail leads to six of the most popular lakes, past impressive mountain peaks, such as the Dachstein massif, and to cultural attractions in the region. Many of the Salzkammergut lakes become pleasantly warm in summer and invite you to take a swimming break; these include, for example, the crystal-clear Wolfgangsee, the impressive Mondsee and the turquoise-blue Attersee. Look forward to a spectacular week and relaxing cycling.

Highlights

  1. UNESCO World Heritage Region Hallstättersee with Hallstatt
  2. selected lakeside bike paths in front of a unique mountain backdrop
  3. Wolfgangsee with the pilgrimage place St. Wolfgang; excursion boat trip on Wolfgangsee
  4. enjoy the ambience in the once imperial summer freshness in Bad Ischl
  5. Mozart village St. Gilgen

The course of your cycling trip:

1. Day: Individual journey to the crystal-clear Wolfgangsee

At the hotel in Strobl you will receive your detailed travel documents. The name of the lake goes back to Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg, who lived here in the 10th century. The church in St. Wolfgang developed into a place of pilgrimage and tourism was already booming in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, the summer resort spilled over from the imperial city of Bad Ischl to Wolfgangsee. A perfect place to start the holiday week ahead! (2 nights in Strobl)

2. Day: From the Wolfgangsee to the former imperial city of Bad Ischl

With the first kilometers you will enjoy cycling along the old railway line of the Ischlerbahn. On the southern shore of the Wolfgangsee, close to the nature reserve Blinklingmoos, take the ferry to Abersee to get to the other side of the lake. A visit to St. Wolfgang on the northern shore is worthwhile in several ways. The sights are close to each other, such as the pilgrimage church, which is dedicated to St. Wolfgang of Regensburg is consecrated. It houses art-historical treasures. Directly opposite is the Hotel “Weisses Rössl”, to which even a musical comedy was dedicated in the 1930s. To the former imperial town of Bad Ischl you cycle via Pfandl, where salt was boiled already in the 12th century. Back we go along the small river Ischl to Strobl on Wolfgangsee by night.

distance: approx. 34 km (altitude difference ascent: 348 m in height / descent: 348 m in height)

3. Day: To the Mondsee region

The Mozart town of St. Gilgen is reached along the south bank cycle path. The pretty little town nestles on the shore below the road. You can leisurely stroll past villas and the birthplace of Mozart's mother. The cycle path now leads past the picturesque Krottensee and over the Scharflingerhöhe you reach the crescent-shaped Mondsee. Don't miss a stroll along the beach promenade. From here you can also admire the most striking mountain of the Mondsee, the Drachenwand, which impresses with its flawless wall alignment of 400 vertical meters. (2 nights in Mondsee)

Distance: approx. 29 km (altitude difference ascent: 287 m in height / descent: 344 m in height)

4. Day: Round trip around the warmest lake in the Salzkammergut - the Irrsee

In Mondsee there is a large basilica with a rich art treasure that is worth a visit. The Irrsee, a little to the north, also belongs to the Mondseerland. It is surrounded by a reed belt, which has become a refuge for many bird species. The Irrsee, which is under nature protection, offers a habitat for endangered animal and plant species with the surrounding bogs. Incidentally, it is the warmest lake in the Salzkammergut - a welcome break during the bike tour can be a dip in the lake. There are always bathing spots that invite you to linger. After biking around the lake, you return to the accommodation in Mondsee.

Distance: approx. 24 km (altitude difference ascent: 251 m in height / descent: 251 m in height)

5. Day: To the turquoise-green 'Sea of the Salzkammergut'

Today's stage takes you along the northern shore of the Mondsee via Au am Mondsee to Unterach am Attersee. There are only four kilometers between Mondsee and Attersee, whose southern part resembles a real mountain lake. The rock walls of the Höllengebirge almost grow into the sky. The summer resort of the Attersee has fascinated artists for over 100 years. Gustav Klimt painted the small town of Weißenbach through his telescope and the composer Gustav Mahler processed his impressions of the lake in a small composing house in Steinbach, which can still be visited today. Let yourself be enchanted by Austria's largest inland lake. Ride to Seefeld for the night. (1 night)

Distance: approx. 26 km (altitude difference ascent: 295 m in height / descent: 316 m in height)

6. Day Wild and romantic Weißenbachtal

When you say goodbye to the Attersee region, you reach the Inner Salzkammergut. But before you will experience a scenic treat, namely a bike tour through the Weißenbachtal. The cycle path leads from Weißenbach am Attersee over long distances through a densely wooded area and always close to the mountain river, which has largely been able to preserve its original bed. Follow the Salzkammergut cycle path to Bad Ischl. This town became a holiday home of European standing in the mid-19th century when Emperor Franz Joseph began to spend his holidays in his summer residence in Ischl. Use the opportunity to take a break here, for example to visit the famous Café Zauner. Then continue the cycle tour via the pilgrimage site of Lauffen to Bad Goisern. (2 nights)

Distance: approx. 34 km (altitude difference ascent: 509 m in height / descent: 489 m in height)

7. Day: At the mystical Hallstättersee

On the way to the Hallstättersee you follow the Traun, the refreshing lifeline of the Salzkammergut, which has its source in the Dead Mountains in Styria. The following section on the eastern shore of the lake, which is reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord, is unspoilt, the view of the Dachstein mountains and glacier is fantastic and the route is spectacular. The flank of the Sarstein falls almost vertically into the lake and the partly on hanging bridges running path gives the impression of riding above the water. In Obertraun there is the possibility to visit the Dachstein ice or mammoth caves. We continue to Hallstatt. The almost perfect ensemble of narrow streets, historic houses, lake panorama and the cultural heritage from the Hallstatt period make this place world famous. Follow the western shore of the lake and return to Bad Goisern for the night.

Distance: approx. 30 km (altitude difference ascent: 575 m in height / descent: 575 m in height)

8. Day: Individual departure or possibility of extension

Bad Goisern is considered the Mecca of mountain bike enthusiasts par excellence, but also offers other opportunities for leisure activities. If you don't have time to spend more vacation days here, it's time to say goodbye and start your journey home.

General information:

The bike tours do not have any technical difficulties; there are only a few climbs! Some physical fitness and the will for endurance are a prerequisite, as well as cycling equipment such as closed sneakers, rucksack, sun and rain protection, functional clothing, jacket and sweater, etc. The routes are easily accessible with trekking bikes. Mostly they lead on asphalted cycle paths, a few stretches also on gravel roads and forest paths. If you want to spend a day quieter, you can of course cover part of the route by public transport such as train or boat.

Bicycles on request - please order in advance!
