The European Peace Ride also passed through the region as part of the European Capital of Culture. The route of the Salzkammergut Peace Ride was based on this. With this cycle tour, you can cycle in the footsteps of this project. Discover most of the Capital of Culture municipalities and the varied landscape between the Alps and the Alpine foothills. Always accompanied by the treasure of water.

The course of your cycling tour:

Day 1: Arrival at Bad Goisern

In Bad Goisern you will receive your welcome pack and travel documents.
Overnight stay in Bad Goisern

Day 2: Bad Mitterndorf – Bad Goisern

From Bad Goisern, the train takes you through the romantic Koppental valley to the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut. Finally arriving in Bad Mitterndorf, you start the cycle tour.
From Bad Mitterndorf you cycle towards Kainisch as a warm up and turn off into a small side valley that leads you to Grundlsee. The route continues through picturesque settlements to Lake Altaussee before following the Traun through Bad Aussee into the Koppental valley. This    takes you back to Upper Austria and you reach Lake Hallstatt in Obertraun. Now you cycle    relaxed into the World Heritage town of Hallstatt with its narrow streets. After crossing the lake by ferry, follow the eastern shore to Bad Goisern to complete today's tour.
Overnight stay in Bad Goisern
approx., 59 km, altitude difference ascent/descent: 510 m/ 810 m

Day 3: Bad Goisern – Weißenbach am Attersee

Today's tour starts at the Traun, which you follow a short while downstream. After crossing the pilgrimage site of Lauffen, the next section takes you through forests, past the unique Villa Blumenthal and the imperial hunting statue and finally into the imperial town of Bad Ischl. You now cycle north along the Traun again to the entrance to the Weißenbachtal valley. Here, after a short stretch of road, a cycle path leads you along the largely unspoilt Weissenbach to the largest lake in the Salzkammergut, Lake Attersee.
Overnight stay in Weißenbach am Attersee
approx. 30 km, altitude difference ascent/descent: 200 m/ 260 m

Day 4: Weißenbach am Attersee – Gmunden

For the next stage of your journey, you first follow the shore of Lake Attersee northwards. After just a few kilometers, the ascent begins along the Kienbach stream to the Kienklause and on to the Taferlklaussee lake, which was artificially created in 1716. The location of the lake in the middle of steep rock faces invites you to take a break. Now follow the course of the Aurach down the valley to Pinsdorf before turning off to the ceramics town of Gmunden.
Overnight stay in Gmunden
approx. 37 km, altitude difference ascent/descent: 390 m/ 440 m

Day 5: Gmunden – Gmunden

Today you leave the rugged Alps for a while and immerse yourself in the gentle hills of the Alpine foothills. To do this, you first cycle northwards, roughly following the course of the Traun as far as Roitham. Cycling south again, you pass fields and small settlements, turn off at Kirchham to follow the Outer Laudach and arrive in the village of Vorchdorf.
You now follow the Alm river, which accompanies you upstream to Grünau. Partly along narrow roads, partly on gravel paths and finally a stretch along the country road, you reach the main town of the Almtal.
Now turn north again and cycle to the small Scharnstein airfield before returning to Gmunden.
The route is relatively long, but can also be shortened up to 27km at various points if necessary.
Overnight stay in Gmunden
approx. 87 km, altitude difference ascent/decent: 644 m/ 644 m

Day 6: Gmunden – Bad Ischl

The last stage of this cycle tour is characterized by water. You set off along the Traunsee lake deeper into the Salzkammergut. Mostly close to the shore, you cycle through Traunkirchen with its wonderfully situated church, past the stone lion statue, which for some marks the northern border of the Salzkammergut, and into the salt works town of Ebensee. You then follow the course of the Traun to the imperial town of Bad Ischl, which forms the crowning finale.
Overnight stay in Bad Ischl
approx. 38 km, altitude difference ascent/decent: 180 m/ 130 m

Day 7: Individual departure or additional nights

For all those who want to spend even more time in the Salzkammergut, additional nights can be reserved. How about a trip to the Rettenbach Valley, which is rich in alpine pastures, followed by a gorge? If you prefer to be pampered, the Eurothermenresort Spa in Bad Ischl is recommended; here you can relax wonderfully.

Otherwise, today it is time to say goodbye to the Salzkammergut.
