"In no other invention is the useful and the pleasant so intimately connected as in the case of the bicycle."

Adam Opel, German entrepreneur, founder of the Opel company, 1837 - 1895

The Salzkammergut is one of the most attractive mountain bike regions in Austria. Water and salt as natural resources characterise the Salzkammergut and its cultural heritage. Formed by once large glaciers and the resulting more than 70 lakes, the river system of the Traun and striking mountain ranges, it is a paradise for ambitious cyclists. With the biker stronghold of Bad Goisern as a starting point, both challenging trails and dreamy alpine pastures are easily accessible.  The unique and varied natural landscape of the Salzkammergut, bordered by the huge Dachstein massif in the south, is one of three Austrian provinces that are also part of this trip. Crisp climbs are sweetened while biking with a rest on beautifully situated alpine pastures and homemade "delicacies" there. The majority is covered on forest roads, but challenging trails also have to be mastered.
Look forward to a fantastic cycling area in the heart of Austria, which also includes visits to internationally famous places such as Hallstatt or Lake Wolfgang, as well as a spectacular potpourri of lakes, alpine pastures and mountains.

Itinerary

1. Day: Individual arrival in the biker stronghold of Bad Goisern

The pretty spa town with its outstanding geographical location on Lake Hallstatt attracts sports and mountain enthusiasts in summer and winter. Depending on the time of arrival, it is worth taking a leisurely excursion along the Traun along the Traunreiterweg to the district of Weißenbach to 'warm up'. From the Goiserer Bridge you are accompanied by the tireless murmur of the Traun to the Weißenbach Bridge. At the hotel in Bad Goisern you will receive your travel documents.
(1 night in Bad Goisern)

2. Day: The Imperial Stage

Today's stage can be described as 'composition at its finest', because the programme includes lush alpine pastures, crisp trail passages and other route highlights. And of course, a hearty stop at a hut is not missing!
From Bad Goisern cycle on over the Wurmstein to the Hotel Predigstuhl. The subsequent ride through the so-called "Ewige Wand" - a classic in the center of Salzkammergut - is breathtaking; About 100 years ago, a path was carved through the vertical rock that offers fascinating views of the Traun Valley. From there, the path continues to the Reinfalzalm, via Leckenmoos and the Gschwendtalm. Now the Hoisnradalm invites you to stop for a bite to eat, including magnificent views over Bad Ischl to Lake Wolfgang and Bad Ischl's local mountains. The ride now goes downhill quickly to Bad Ischl and continues along the Salzkammergut cycle path to Strobl at the eastern end of Lake Wolfgang.
(1 night at Lake Wolfgang)

Distance: approx. 35 km (altitude difference: ascent 905 m/ descent: 866 m)

3. Day: 5-Lakes-Tour

The Schafberg, which is over 1,730 meters high, is in the center of today's day tour. At the beginning of the stage, you reach the mystical Schwarzensee, which invites you to take a first refreshing dip in the cool water. Afterwards we continue to the largest lake in Austria, the Attersee. From the southern end of the Attersee, the path climbs steadily uphill again, past the Moosalm and the crossroads of the same name. When you reach the alpine pasture area of the Eisenau, you touch the highest point of the day at just over 1,000 meters. Downhill, there are wonderful panoramic views of the Drachenwand and the Eglsee before you reach the crescent-shaped Mondsee. Over the Scharflinger Höhe and the picturesque Krottensee, the path now leads in the direction of Wolfgangsee. Soon the Mozart town of St. Gilgen is reached. Below the road, the pretty little town with its villas and the birthplace of Mozart's mother nestles on the shore. The lakeside cycle path leads near the Blinklingmoor nature reserve to Strobl; then the cycle path follows the small river Ischl via Lindau to Bad Ischl.
(1 night in Bad Ischl).
Distance: approx. 64 km (altitude difference: ascent 1,600 m / descent: 1,688 m)

4. Day: To the Styrian Salzkammergut

Via Perneck, a district of Bad Ischl, you start up in the direction of the Hoisnradalm and on to the managed Hütteneckalm, known as a wonderful viewing lodge with a view of the Dachstein and in the immediate vicinity of Bad Goisern's local mountain. Further on, you reach the Schwarzenbachloch cave entrance, where a lindworm is said to have once lived. The Halleralm is passed via the goods road in Pichlern and the so-called "Dachstein Circuit" is ridden. Historically, the Ausseerland in front of us is connected to the Salzkammergut via the Salzberg. Salt mining began here in 1147 a.D. and continues to this day. The view of Mount Loser, which - like a fortress - dominates the pretty Altaussee Lake is impressive. From Altaussee, the old Pötschenroad leads back to Upper Austria and a small town, called St. Agatha, a district of Bad Goisern. The following section along the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt is more reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord than a lake district. The spectacular route, past Obertraun, ends in Hallstatt, which is particularly famous for its exceptional location between the Dachstein Mountains and Lake Hallstatt.
(1 night in Hallstatt)
Distance: approx. 43 km (altitude difference: ascent 1,239 m / descent: 1,193 m)

5. Day: Around the Plassen

Between Lake Hallstatt and the Gosau Valley, the almost 2,000-meter-high Plassen is a striking elevation. Today's tour is one of the more strenuous of this trip. Through the Echerntal it first goes up to the southern falls of the Plassen. From here, the view widens with a magnificent view of the lake. The asphalted Waldbachleitn, blasted into the rock, is spectacular. At the bridge you are so close to the waterfalls that the spray literally sprays in your face. The arduous ascent is rewarded with a stop at the Roßalm. It has been family-owned for over 350 years and the landlords only offer homemade delicacies.
From now on, it is mainly downhill with a short counter-climb at the Schäferalm. The Löckenmoosberg with its impressive, rare high moor and the nearby grindstone quarries are circumnavigated. The journey continues in the direction of the Gosau Valley. Following the Gosaubach, you reach Lake Hallstatt again after more than 200 meters in altitude. Here you follow the shore road to the overnight stay in Bad Goisern.
(1 night in Bad Goisern)
Distance: approx. 49 km (altitude difference: ascent 1,793 m / descent: 1,820 m)

6. Tag: Individual departure or additional nights can be booked

In addition to cycling, Bad Goisern also offers other leisure activities, such as a visit to the thermal baths or countless hiking and walking trails. If your time does not allow you to spend more days here, it is time to say goodbye and return home.
