Hiking time out at the Feuerkogel

Hut tour at the Höllengebirge
Stunning views and wonderful nature
  • 2 x overnight stays in huts
  • Ascent and descent with the Feuerkogel cable car
  • Arrival daily possible

All people will perceive that on high mountains, where the air is pure and thin, one breathes more freely and feels physically lighter and mentally more cheerful.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, French-Swiss writer and philosopher, 1712 – 1778

The Feuerkogel is one of twelve peaks of the Höllengebirge, which stretches between Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee, and is part of the 'Northern Limestone Alps' mountain group. Strongly karstified, interwoven with numerous sinkholes and formed from shell limestone, the hiking area has its own special charm. The area around the mountain station of the cable car is quite well visited; however, the further you walk the Faltengebirge to the west, the lonelier and more rustic the landscape becomes. The hiking trails are immensely promising. It is not uncommon to get a 360-degree view that reaches as far as the glacier of the Dachstein in the south. Absolute highlights in terms of panoramic views are the Alberfeldkogel right at the beginning of the hiking tour and the Kranabethhütte, which is also an overnight stay at the end of the 2nd day. The karst and sinkhole adventure trail very close to the hut provides interesting background information on the formation of the karst rock and the sinkholes. Immerse yourself in a sea of fabulous vantage points, mountain pine alleys, imposing rock formations, Ice Age relics and beautiful flora.

  2. Immerse yourself in a rustic mountain scenery shaped by the last ice age

  5. Panoramic mountain range in the Salzkammergut mountains

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Ebensee and hike in the karstic Höllengebirge

With the almost 1,600-meter-high Feuerkogel, the Höllengebirge, which shows respectable wall falls of Wetterstein limestone on the north side, breaks off in the east above the Traun Valley. From Ebensee, the chain mountains, built up by Wetterstein limestones, can be easily reached by cable car. There are numerous hiking opportunities on this extensive high alpine pasture. In the summer months, the flower lover will find a wide variety of alpine plants here. The mountain spring even transforms the plateau into a sea of flowers. A well-marked path first leads to the viewing platform of the Alberfeldkogel with the Europe Cross, consisting of individual cubes with a stone from each EU member state. The walls break off almost vertically into the Langbath valley and the view of the Traun and Langbath lakes as well as the surrounding mountains of the Salzkammergut is overwhelming. Beyond the plateau, the paths become lonelier and you hike through the karst landscape to the Rieder Hut.
(1 night at the Rieder Hut)
Hiking: approx. 2-3 hours (approx. 5 km, ascent 440 m, descent 250 m)

Day 2: Wildly romantic alleys and through former glacial valleys

At 1,765 meters, today you can experience the highest point with the overnight stay at the Rieder Hut. This small hut has been around since 1930 and is an important base on the long way over the Höllengebirge. Through the so-called Haselwaldgasse, it goes in a mostly leisurely up and down towards the Schneekogel. Past the idyllically situated (private) Vordere Spitzalm, where old foundations of long-dilapidated alpine huts can still be seen, you follow the path, which first runs flat through partly ancient trees, to the edge of the terrain. Now a rock step about 30 meters high is reached to the Ofenhöhe, but its path is well secured with wire ropes. Then follow the Kaiserweg through the karstified, pine-covered "glacier valley". During the last ice age, a small local glacier was located here, which gave this eastern part of the Höllengebirge a distinctive profile. Follow the narrow rocky path and finally come up through a small gravel cirque to the Höllengebirge plateau. If you like, you can climb the Helmeskogel in a large arc, whose summit cross has been visible for a long time. On the way to the Christophorus Hut, the eventful mountain pine labyrinth can also be visited. The view from the terrace of the hut is phenomenal, where - with a little luck - the sunset can be observed.
(1 night at the Christophorus Hut)
Hiking: approx. 3-4 hours (approx. 7,5 km, ascent 260 m, descent 490 m)

Day 3: Descent with the Feuerkogel cable car and departure

To the southern end of Lake Traunsee, into the valley to Ebensee, you can take the cable car.
The Ebensee Bay on the southern shore of Lake Traunsee offers optimal conditions for water sports enthusiasts in the warm season. During a walk through the village back to the starting point of the trip, you can witness a small spectacle and watch the surfers perform their tricks. For all those who want to spend even more time in the Salzkammergut, additional nights can be reserved; otherwise, the individual departure will take place today.

General information:

During the tour you are partly in high alpine terrain. Appropriate mountain equipment, surefootedness, a head for heights and endurance are therefore a prerequisite. The necessary equipment includes: mountain boots, functional clothing, backpack, water and food, rain and sun protection, warm clothing - temperature drops are possible even in midsummer, hat, warm gloves, first aid kit, mobile phone, possibly hiking sticks, etc.

The carrying out of the tour is dependent on weather conditions!
