Glöcklerlauf in Ebensee
- traditioneller Ebenseer Glöcklerlauf
- Krippenaustellung in Bad Ischl
The age-old customs surrounding the Rough Nights, with their secret magic, have been a fixture in the winter months for decades. One of the most beautiful customs is the Glöcklerlauf on Sept. 5, the eve of the Holy Three Kings festival.
Ebensee, a market town on the southern shore of Lake Traun, is the centre and origin of this raunchy night-time tradition. Around 18 passes and around 300 "glockenspiels" traverse the snowy streets and alleys of the Salzkammergutort that night. The purpose of the Glöcklerlauf is said to be to win salvation and blessings from good spirits and to drive away evil spirits. Due to the uniqueness of this custom, the Glöckler Lauf in Ebensee was added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in 2010.
