Carnival in the Salzkammergut
- Full-day tour guide "Dachstein Tour"
- Fun curling
The Carnival days are celebrated extensively and exuberantly in the Salzkammergut. Tradition and folk culture are also given great importance during fasching.
Between foolish revelry and centuries-old tradition: During the fifth season, Carnival, the Salzkammergut reveals itself as the stronghold of Carnival revelry in Austria. With Fasching, the Salzkammergut not only rings in the final highlight of winter customs, but also uses this tradition to drive away evil spirits and ask for fertility and a rich harvest. The tradition of Carnival dates back to the Celtic era.
The silly arch spans the entire Salzkammergut from the famous Fetzenumzug in Ebensee (where Carnival is even celebrated as a "National Holiday") to the Carnival fun in the imperial city of Bad Ischl, all the way to the traditional Carnival customs in the Ausseerland and countless Carnival parades, events, and balls around Carnival time. Laughter is definitely a lot of fun – especially when the fools are in charge.

Opportunity to attend the following carnival events:
Traditional Ebensee shred procession
Definitely the most unusual procession of the turbulent carnival events: men and women dress up, put on so-called "rags" (an old piece of clothing with fringes), usually put on a carved wooden mask and parade through the town. If they encounter someone they know or who gives cause for ridicule, that person is mercilessly reprimanded. Things can get a little rough - that means you shouldn´t watch in your Sunday best.
Procession of the "Flinserl" in Bad Aussee
We recommend visiting as a part of the accompanied trip "Around the Dachstein". The Flinserl dresses are made form natrual linen and embroudered with colorful cloth patches in a figural and ornamental style. The magnificent robes are said to have come to Bad Aussee from Venice through the salt trade. The actual Flinserl procession takes place every year on Shrove tuesday at 2 p.m. Starting from the Gasthof "Blaue Traube" begibt sich der Zug, angeführt von der Flinserlmusik und beschützt durch die Zacherl, in geschlossener Formation und unter den Augen unzähliger Zuseher, durch das Ortszentrum auf den Kurhausplatz Bad Aussee.
"Faschingsbegraben in Bad Ischl"
The carnival season ends on Ash Wednesday with the so-called "Faschingseingraben" (Fasching´s burial). A disguised straw doll is first carried through the city by the foolish companions in a funeral procession, lit at the Steinfeld Bridge, and finally given to the waters of the Traun River. Thus, carnival is symbolically buried for another year.
