Themenreisen
  • Gmundner Kermaik Manufaktur
  • Eintritt in das Hotel Austria - Museum der Stadt Bad Ischl

The Salzkammergut is a beautiful destination that impresses with its rich cultural history and nature. On the "On the Trail of the Capital of Culture" trip there are some highlights, such as the towns of Bad Ischl, Gmunden and Ausserland, that should not be missed.

CULTURE IS THE NEW SALT.
The Salzkammergut offers a high density of exciting stories, places and people and is embedded in an impressive landscape. Shaped by the elements of salt, water and wood, this is a complex region where the history of salt production began 7,000 years ago in Hallstatt. The salt trade has nourished the region, enriched it and made it internationally connected, it has attracted the wealthy and powerful, with the summer freshness the Salzkammergut's historic cultural landscape has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With its growing compactness, shielded by mountains, lakes and rivers, the Salzkammergut stands as an example for many other regions of the world. The gulf between the industrialised north and the agriculturally-exploited south is vividly illustrated here, serving both as a prime example and as a laboratory to meet the increasing political, cultural, economic and egological challenges of Europe and the world.

As part of the Cultural Capital of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, various events and projects were carried out that enriched the cultural life of the city. The Kaiserzug played a role in this by serving as a means of transport for visitors and participants in these events. Pick up the Habsburger Törtchen to go that you can enjoy comfortably on one of the many park benches in Bad Ischl.

Addmission to the Museum of the city of Bad Ischl - Hotel Austria
In the cintext of the Kulturhauptstadt Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, the Museum of the City of Bad Ischl was comprehensively renovated and redesigned. The reopening took place on 19. July 2024.

Permanent exhibition: "Welcome to Hotel Austria"
The Stadtmuseum, located directly on the Esplanade, used to be the famous Hotel Austria and this is where our story begins. We dive into the world of summer freshness, the beginnings of the spa business, the imperial summer residence, railway nostalgia. Together we embark on a journey through the historic Salzkammergut. We meet illustrious summer freshmen at the hotel bar, meet famous hosts and wonder what lies behind the beautiful glow of operettas, soirees and waltzes? The exhibition sheds light on this. It surprises and provokes thought, and raises questions that even delicate periods of history do not spare.

3. Day - Ausseerland

As part of the Cultural Capital of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, the Ausserland was actively involved in cultural events. The region presented itself with a variety of events and projects that focused on the cultural heritage and traditions of the Ausserland.

The 3-Lakes tour first takes you by boat across Styria´s largest lake, Grundlsee. After that, a walk of about 30 minutes awaits - this way you reach Toplitzsee. Using traditional wooden boats, called pläten, the journey continues along waterfalls to the last stop: a short stretch of forest that leads to the remote Kammersee. From there, take the pläten back over Toplitzsee and from there walk back to Gößl, where your bus picks you up again.

Then make a stop at the Steinberghaus in Altaussee (possibility of visting the salt mine - OPTIONAL).

Then drive to the oldest lebzzelterei in the region for a small tasting.
