The Salzkammergut has been a center of European culture for thousands of years and still presents itself a vibrant and inspiring place. Many artists and prominent figures were looking for, and found rest and relaxation in this region. Ancient, winding pilgrimage paths lead to the charming villages of the Salzkammergut. We invite you to follow these historic tracks! 

General information

The tours have no technical difficulties. The daily hiking routes are between 2,5 and 5 hours. The daily tours leave enough time to take advantage of the Salzkammergut Card! Hiking equipment like good hiking shoes, rucksack, rain and sun protection, functional clothing and also a warmer jacket or pullover are recommended.

1. day: Individual arrival at Lake Wolfgangsee at your accommodation

Handover of the detailed travel documents at your hotel. We recommend a walk through the town center of St. Wolfgang.

2. day: Lake Wolfgangsee and Mount Schafberg difference in altitude

Ascent with the famous cogwheel railway to Mount Schafberg. The steepest cogwheel railway in Austria has been running from St. Wolfgang to mount Schafberg since 1893. Enjoy the stunning view from the top of the Schafberg. We recommend a nice walk on the plateau, enjoy the panoramic view and have a refreshment in the restaurant. Descent included.

3. day: St. Wolfgang - Bad Ischl, ~ 16 km, 5 h, difference in altitude á234 m / â296 m

Walk along the promenade to Berau and further on the Bürglstein promenade to Strobl. Along the Ischl river to Pfandl and the “Elisabethwaldweg” to Bad Ischl.

You have the possibility to take the bus from Strobl to Bad Ischl (payment on spot).

4. day: Bad Ischl and Mount Katrin, ~ 4 km, 2 h, difference in altitude á290 m / â245 m

Walk along the Traun river promenade to the Katrin cable car. Bad Ischl’s landmark mountain offers a new perspective on the pristine Alpine scenery. Circuit the plateau on the “7-lakes-walk” and see if you can spot all 7 lakes.

5. day: Bad Goisern – Hallstatt, ~ 11 km, 5 h, difference in altitude á668 m / â327 m

Take a scenic train ride to Bad Goisern and walk along the western shore of Lake Hallstättersee to Hallstatt. Visit the “Salzwelten Hallstatt” and learn about Hallstatt’s longstanding history as a salt town (guided tour included). Afterwards walk downhill from the “Salzberg” directly to Hallstatt or take the funicular (to be paid on spot).

6. day: Visit the “5 Fingers” viewing platform on Mount Krippenstein (2000m above sea level)

Walk to Obertraun (~7 km, 2 h) - in Obertraun the cable car takes you up to Mount Krippenstein. Visit of the “5 Fingers” which rank among the most spectacular viewpoints of the Alps and the impressive Ice Caves. On the Krippenstein you find different hiking routes. Hike back from Obertraun to Hallstatt (Alternative: bus or ship - payment on spot).

7. day: Hallstatt – Echerntal valley round hiking, ~7 km, 2 h, difference in altitude á 183m / â184 m

You walk through the romantic Echerntal valley to the impressive Waldbachstrub waterfalls and back to the center. Take the bus from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl.

8. day: Take the bus from Bad Ischl to St. Wolfgang (if you have your car in St. Wolfgang)
