East Tyrol means more than 260 three-thousanders, crystal-clear mountain lakes, ravishing glacier streams and a stunning landscape. Immerse yourself in the mountains, climb the peaks and indulge in culinary delights in the huts.

Requirements and general information

The tour mainly covers alpine terrain. You will need appropriate mountain equipment and basic stamina. Necessary mountain equipment: ankle-high boots, functional clothes, rucksack, food and water, rain and sun protection, first-aid kit, mobile phone, possibly hiking sticks, … Even in the midsummer there could be a drop of temperature, so please make sure that you have warm clothing with you including gloves and cap.

Your route is recorded for posterity when you enter your name in every hut logbook in the Dachstein Mountains. The routes are well signposted, although the signs could partly be covered by snow. Hence, it is imperative that you take your maps and the Dachstein hiking book with you. An experienced guide is available to accompany you upon request.

Arrangement

  • 7 x Overnight stay with half board
    (2 x ***hotel, 5 x hut: communal bunks, hut sleeping bags mandatory, routing water available (specially cold), toilets partly without water flushing)
  • 1 x welcome video with explanations and information that you need for the tour
  • 1 x Hiking map and route description (1 x per room)
  • Daily service hotline from 08.00 - 18.00 (also on weekends)

Routing:

1st day: Individual arrival in Virgen or Matrei in East Tyrol.

Overnight stay in a ***hotel

 

2nd day: Virgen – Zupalseehütte - approx. 7 km, 3-4 h, altitude difference: á 1252 / â 20 m

For overnight stay in Matrei: Drive by car or public bus (payable locally) to Virgen. The hike starts in Virgen an der Isel with a climb mostly through the forest up to the Wetterkreuzhütte. Here you can enjoy a first glimpse of the surrounding mountains with its more than 60 three thousand metre peaks – including Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner. Via the Höllerhöhe you continue uphill and on the path no. 90 directly to the Zupalseehütte, which is located on the lake of the same name. For the afternoon an additional round on the Zupalkogel and past the summit of Legerle is possible.

3rd day: Zupalseehütte – Lasörlinghütte - approx. 12 km, 3-4 h, altitude difference: á 745 / â 802 m

Enjoy today’s hike between blooming alpine roses and views up to the Großvenediger Glacier. From the Lasörlinghütte on hiking trails past the Steinkassee, which invites you to a nice rest. Follow the path to the farmed Merschenalm, over the Merschenhöhe towards Lasörlinghütte. Take the junction via the Virgentörl up to the Grietzer Hörndle and pass the Gumpenlacke and the Gritzer Lakes. With a good view you can even see the South Tyrolean Dolomites from the summit. You hike back to the junction and continue to the Lasörlinghütte.

4th day: Lasörlinghütte – Bergerseehütte - approx. 10 km, 3-4 h altitude difference: á 751 / â 859 m

Today you will experience a day of contrasts. The tour starts with a steep climb to the Bergertörl at over 2800 m in a rugged stone desert landscape, before going down on the other side to the idyllic mountain hut located in lush green mountain meadows. On the Muhs-Panorama Trail, you will hike to the summit of Muhsköpfl, where you may spot one or the other marmot. Then the trail leads back to the Bergerseehütte.

5th day: Bergerseehütte – Eisseehütte – approx. 11 km, 5-6 h, altitude difference: á 1124 / â 883 m

Today you leave the mountains of the Lasörling Group and descend via the Zopatnitz gorge into the Virgental valley to Prägraten, to climb again on the opposite side of the valley near the Timmelbach – this time into the Venice Group.

Overnight at the Eisseehütte

 

6th day: Eisseehütte – Bonn-Matreierhütte- approx. 10 km. 3-4 h, altitude difference: á 614 /â 414m

To start the day, make a round to the Eissee. On the way to the Bonn-Matreierhütte, you will have a wonderful view of the Lasörling Group and the course of the past days. Walk along the Venice High Trail to the Bonn-Matreierhütte. At the hut there is a rock chapel to discover in the immediate vicinity and countless marmots and edelweiss along the way.

7th day: Bonn-Matreierhütte – Virgen - approx. 8 km. 3-4 h, altitude difference: á 13 / â 1560 m

The last stage of this tour leads down the “Adlerweg” first to the small Niltal and then to the Gotschaunalm. After a break you will reach the centre of Virgen via the district of Marin.

Notes on staying at an Alpine lodge:

  • *Hut sleeping bag: blankets are available in the huts; necessary but mandatory is only a lightweight cotton/silk sleeping bag liner
  • Card payment is not possible at most cabins. Take enough cash for food etc. with you on site.
  • Overnight stay in the hut in a shared room or communal bunks. Some double rooms available on request for an extra charge.
  • Dogs on request; not allowed in the sleeping areas. Attended stay in the winter room possible, partly dog kennels available, extra costs to be paid on spot. In Austria there is a general linen and muzzle requirement!
