Thoughts on the Salzburg Advent Singing 2022

„Snow in Bethlehem“

„Once upon a time” or “It came to pass” – these words were usually at the beginning of our grandmother’s stories that we listened to as children at bedtime and which helped us slide bilissfully into our dream world. These stories were often repeated many times, but each time they sounded a little different. Again and again they were enriched by the oral tradition with new, imaginative details.

This wonderful world of fairy tales, legends and myths is probably the oldest of all literary forms and goes back deep into our human history. Identical content can be discovered in completely foreign cultures across all continents. This seems to come from our “collective unconscious”, said C.G. Jung as he tried to explain how it came about. Despite global networking and uniform biblical translation, the Advent events around Mary and Joseph continue to experience different forms of popular piety in the diverse cultures of this world, including in our alpine regions.

This Salzburg Advent Singing will remind us of blissful evenings of our childhood with a fairytale story. And also of the time when our grandmother told us her ancient Advent story, handed down verbally from generation to generation. Because it was “Once upon a time” over 2000 years ago, that a woman named Maria collected delicate, spicy Thyme and honey-scented bedstraw for the crib. And “it came to pass” that snow fell from the sky again in Bethlehem tat very night after a long, long time without. Everything froze in the freezing cold. Only a single bright white snow rose announced new hope, new life. And since that time, it has also been known as the Christmas Rose.
