The defining feature of the Salzkammergut has always been the visual drama between the countless small and large lakes nestling in the abruptly rising mountains of the Northern Alps. The long distance trail links these hotspots in a never seen before, comprehensive way. Discover lush Alpine meadows, fairy-tale forests and invigorating waters in a cultural landscape of outstanding authenticity.

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Ebensee.

You will receive your travel documents at your accommodation

Overnight stay in Ebensee

Day 2: Offensee – Lake Almsee – Almtal

~ 17 km, 6 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 695 m / decent 776 m

After breakfast you will be transferred to Lake Offensee. Today’s stage is also part of the European long distance trail E4. Via the Hochpfad trail you cross over to the Almtal and arrive at the pristine Lake Almsee. The Lake is the source for the Alm River and you will follow the course of the river in the coming days. Transfer from Lake Almsee to your accommodation.

Day 3: free day to spend in Grünau

We recommend a walk into the center of Grünau im Almtal. On the path you will come upon a fisher’s hut (FischAlm where you are invited to enjoy a “Steckerlfisch” (grilled fish on a stick), from local river fish.

Also worth visiting is the “Wildtierpark Cumberland” (animal park). It’s about 4 km from your accommodation and invites for an extensive walk.

Day 4: Grünau im Almtal – Lake Laudachsee – Gmunden

~ 23,5 km, 6-7 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 673 m / descent 775 m

After a short stretch along the river, the S-Trail branches off into the woods towards Lake Laudachsee. From the lake the trail continues to Mount Grünberg, landmark of Gmunden. Here you can choose to take the cable car into town or continue on foot via the hamlet Weyer.

General information:

Daily stages are introductory to moderately difficult, hiking distances can be adjusted easily by public transport. A reasonable fitness level and basic hiking equipment like good hiking shoes, rucksack, rain and sun protection, functional clothing and also a warmer jacket or pullover are necessary to enjoy your trip.
