Hut-to-hut hiking in the hiking paradise Dachstein-West

the hut tour for beginners
Gosau - Gablonzerhütte - Goisererhütte - Gosau
  • with over night stay at alpine huts

Getting older is like climbing a mountain: the higher you get, the more arduous the path becomes, but the wider the view becomes.

Ingmar Bergmann, Swedish screenwriter, 1918-2007

The "Gosau" is the name given to a long side valley of the upper Traun course, which stretches from the shore of Lake Hallstatt to the Gosau lakes. To this day, the Gosau Valley is characterised by an abundance of forests. So it is not surprising that the townscape is mainly characterized by houses made of wood. Lots of greenery gives this high mountain valley a friendly, even airy appearance. What is striking is the location of the two Protestant and Catholic churches, which are located on a hill, not far from each other. Gosau played an important role during the Counter-Reformation; even today, the Protestant community is still the larger one in contrast to Austria, which is predominantly Catholic. The upper Gosau Valley with the surrounding high mountain regions is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the entire Salzkammergut and offers demanding mountaineers as well as wonderful paths for leisurely walkers. The same applies to the plateau of the Zwieselalm, which is a good 600 meters higher, with its beautifully situated huts, which sometimes also invite you to stop for a bite to eat. From there, there is an impressive panorama that stretches from the Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, to the Großvenediger. In 1997, this impressive region on the Dachstein was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Look forward to a hut tour in the alpine area of the Inner Salzkammergut!

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Gosau

The Gosau Valley is one of the most magnificent mountain areas in the Northern Alps and comes to a brilliant conclusion with the two Gosau lakes at the head of the valley. You can get a first good overview of the extensive Gosau Valley during a hike on the Panorama Trail, which nestles against the mountain a little above the valley and winds its way from the Mittertal to the Vorderer Gosausee. The trail is about eleven kilometers long in its full length, but offers numerous entry points, so it can be individually designed. At the accommodation in Gosau you will receive your detailed travel documents.
(1 night in Gosau).
Optional hike: approx. 11 kilometers (several access and exit points)

Day 2: Breathtaking scenery on the Zwieselalm

From the Calvary in Gosau, the so-called Herrenweg leads quite comfortably uphill. Again and again small streams are crossed. Over forest paths and wet meadows, the route leads past several alpine huts to the Zwieselalm, where horses graze in addition to cows in summer. A unique panorama with the Dachstein glacier, the rock towers of the Gosaukamm and Lake Gosau now spreads out from the eyes. The Zwieselalm hut, which was once visited by Empress Sisi and where people still cook without electricity, is quaint. For the night, we now go to the hospitable Gablonzer lodge at an altitude of 1,522 meters, which is located below the mighty peaks of the two Donnerkogel; these represent the prelude to the bizarre Gosaukamm.
(Overnight backpack and hut sleeping bag*- for the night at the Gablonzer lodge has to be carried by yourself!)
(Overnight stay at Gablonzer lodge)
Hiking: approx. 4 1/2 hours (9 km, ascent 890 m in height, descent 123 m in height)

Day 3: In the Salzkammergut Mountains

With the Gosaukamm cable car, the difference in altitude to the Gosau Valley, which is said to have been even more secluded than Hallstatt in the past, can be quickly overcome. From the valley station of the cable car, take the public bus past old farmhouses to Gosau-Vordertal. The hike through the forest first leads to the Iglmoosalm, from where the Gosaukamm shows itself in all its wildness. Over the Schartenalm with its many old hay barns and huts and the ascent of another almost 400 meters in altitude, the Goiserer lodge, located between the Sonnenwendkogel and the Hoher Kalmberg, comes into view. The luggage can stay at the hut, but there is still the possibility to put the crown on the hike to the Hoher Kalmberg. About 10 minutes after the Goiserer lodge, below the marked summit ascent, is the cave of the Kalmoos Church. During the Counter-Reformation, Protestants met here for secret services. The view from the summit of the Gosaukamm, Dachstein, Krippenstein and Schafberg is spectacular. After a long day of hiking, the hut team will spoil you with so called Schmakerln, and the view from the terrace is a nice reward.
(Overnight backpack and hut sleeping bag*- for the night at the Goiserer lodge has to be carried by yourself!)
(Overnight stay at Goiserer lodge)
Hiking: approx. 3 hours (5 km, ascent 797 m in height, descent 0 m in height)

Day 4: Back to the sprawling mountain village of Gosau

Via the Iglmoosalm you follow the Bible Trail again to Gosau. The towers of the Gosaukamm come into view - formed 200 million years ago as a coral reef in warm sea water. For all those who want to spend even more time in the Salzkammergut, additional overnight stays can be reserved. For example, a visit to the Gosau lakes, which the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was already enthusiastic about and described as the "eye of God", is a good idea.
Your luggage will be waiting for you at the hotel in Gosau, where you spent the first night. You can arrange your departure individually.
Hiking: approx. 2-3 hours (7 km, ascent 46 m in height, descent 873 m in height)
