The defining feature of the Salzkammergut has always been the visual drama between the countless small and large lakes nestling in the abruptly rising mountains of the Northern Alps. The long distance trail links these hotspots in a never seen before, comprehensive way. Discover lush Alpine meadows, fairy-tale forests and invigorating waters in a cultural landscape of outstanding authenticity.

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Gmunden

You will receive your travel documents at your accommodation
Overnight stay in Gmunden

Day 2: Gmunden – Altmünster – Langbathtal

~ 18 km, 6 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 760 m / descent 555 m
The tour starts at Gmunden’s lakeside promenade – past the picturesque Schloss Orth the trail leads into Altmünster. Slowly the trail winds its way into the Grasberg hills with great views of Lake Traunsee. Finally the last stage passes through shady forests of the Langbath valley.

Day 3: Weissenbach valley – Weissenbach am Attersee

~ 16 km, 5,5 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 310 m / descent 290 m
You can take the public bus from Ebensee to the beginning of the Weißenbachtal. After a short stretch on asphalt, dive into the romantic river valley and hike along the largely original stream bed. Towards the end, a slight ascent through mystical forest awaits you before you reach today's destination, Lake Attersee.

Day 4: Burggraben – Moosalm – Weissenbach am Attersee

 ~ 11 km, 4,5 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 450 m / descent 460 m
After a short bus ride to today's starting point, you hike through dense forest along the Burgauklamm uphill to the Moosalm. Now you walk along forest roads with some spectacular panoramas over the lake Attersee back to the Weissenbachtal.

Day 5: Weissenbach am Attersee – Hochleckenhaus

~ 9 km, 5-6 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 1280 m / descent 200 m
Today you head into the mountains: You start on the trail to the Schoberstein and then hike higher and higher along the Mahdl Schneid. Here, you are accompanied by spectacular views of Lake Attersee again and the slowly changing vegetation in the high mountains.

Luggage transfer from Weissenbach to Ebensee where you spend the last night (Overnight backpack and hut sleeping bag for the nights at Hochleckhaus have to be carried by yourself)

Day 6: Hike into the valley to the Langbath lakes and to Ebensee

~ 10 km, 6 hrs, difference in altitude ascent 300 / descent 1190 m
From the Hochleckenhaus you start towards the goldenes Gatterl (golden Gate). Via the Aurach Ursprung you walk on towards the Taferklaussee and finally reach the Langbathseen. From here you take a taxi back to Ebensee.

Day 7: Ferry back to Gmunden

General information:

Daily stages are moderate to challenging; hiking distances in the valley can be adjusted easily by public transport. A reasonable fitness level and basic hiking equipment like good hiking shoes, rucksack, rain and sun protection, functional clothing and also a warmer jacket or pullover are necessary to enjoy your trip.

The local tax, also known as visitor's tax, is payable locally to the landlord; the amount depends on the resort and is between €1,00 and €4,00 per person per night. Children up to the age of 15 are usually exempt.

Notes on staying at an Alpine lodge:

  • *Hut sleeping bag: blankets are available in the huts; necessary but mandatory is only a lightweight cotton/silk sleeping bag liner
  • Due to their location, not all huts can offer running water, hot water or showers. In some cases there is also no flushing system in the toilets.
  • On most huts, card payment is not possible. Take enough cash with you for food and drinks.

Level of difficulty
Daily stages with up to 1800 metres of ascent - Ø 8-18 hours walking time - extremely difficult terrain: Trails with very large obstacles. Only for trained hikers.
