Mountaineering is not a sport, not a competition, but a philosophy, a way of life.

Cesare Maestri, Italian mountaineer, 1929 – 2021

Don't be tempted by the name "Lower Tauern", because the steep peaks and bold ridges are impressive, but above all a revelation for the eye and the senses. Mountain slopes are reflected in countless lonely mountain lakes. In between, torrents bubble and gurgle, which further enrich the hiking experience. This region is known for its abundance of water, as it is the most water-rich mountain massif in the Eastern Alps. So it is hardly surprising that water in its many manifestations plays a prominent role on every hiking day.

A special feature of the Dachstein-Tauern region is the 120-kilometre-long Ennstal Panorama Trail, which offers both views and variety. In a gallant way, it combines being out and about in the alpine area with a feeling of well-being. The route leads to the left and right of the Enns, partly directly on the banks of the shimmering river, partly high above the valley. North of the Enns, it is the peaks of the Dachstein massif that impress the hiker. You cross the entire sunny plateau of Ramsau until you finally reach the Gröbminger valley basin in the east. The trail, which runs south of the Enns, leads along the foot of well-known Tauern peaks, such as the Hochwurzen.

Look forward to varied hiking days; one or the other variant also deviates from the panorama trail and lets you dive even deeper into the mountain scenery!

The course of your hiking tour:

Day 1: Individual arrival in Schladming

The former farming village above the Enns Valley is an ideal starting point for hikes in the Tauern. Situated between the Dachstein in the north and the Tauern in the south, Schladming became very well known as a winter sports centre. To get used to it, a city walk through Schladming is a good idea. On the pretty town square there are many cafés and restaurants to choose from, where you can experience the cheerful hustle and bustle of the mountain lovers. You will receive the travel documents at your accommodation.
(2 nights in Schladming)

Day 2: Suggestion: Mountain solitude at the Duisitzkarsee in the Schladming Tauern

Today's hiking tour to the picturesquely situated Duisitzkarsee runs on a classic hiking trail through high forest with roots and forest floor. From Schladming, however, the hiking bus first takes you to the Eschachboden in the Untertal. This is where the circular hike starts, which is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding and beautiful in the Schladming Tauern. The interplay of water, mountains and rustic alpine pastures is more harmonious here than almost anywhere else. A beautiful path through the forest takes you quickly uphill. Finally you reach the open valley basin of the Duisitzkar and the magnificent mountain panorama opens up, which is reflected in the water. In the height of summer, don't forget your bathing suit; there are even two huts here, where you can have a good snack. The way back is undoubtedly varied. A path through the small Stierkar skirts the Neualm and leads back to the Eschachalm. The bus takes you back to your accommodation in Schladming.
Hiking: approx. 4-5 hours (9,5 km, ascent 704 m in height, descent 702 m in height)

Day 3: Ascent to the foot of the Dachstein southern slopes

From Rohrmoos at the foot of the Hochwurzen, today's stage leads on hiking trails and short forest road sections into the Preunegg Valley. Now you dive into the mysterious Strub Gorge, where a picturesque meandering brook and small ponds are waiting to be discovered. In Gleiming, the Enns is crossed and then you continue along the panorama trail, past Halserberg and Rittisberg. At 1,100 meters, at a sunny altitude, the Ramsau Plateau lies directly below the Dachstein southern slopes. The wide range of leisure activities on offer is spread over another two 'floors', namely the alpine region at the foot of the Dachstein south face and the glacier area on the Hoher Dachstein.
(2 nights in Ramsau a. Dachstein)
Hiking: approx. 8 hours (19,5 km, ascent 962 m in height, descent 688 m in height)

Day 4: Suggestion: Adventure day on the Dachstein Glacier

The hiking bus takes you to the Türlwand valley station and thus to the ascent to the highest mountain in Styria - the Hoher Dachstein. In a very short time you cover an altitude of about 1,000 meters; an indescribable feeling of vastness is conveyed. The view sweeps from the icy glacier far into the distance to the south and loses itself on the ridge of the Central Alps. Once at the top, you can take a short hike to the Dachsteinwarte Seethalerhütte. This easy hike leads along a groomed glacier path to the highest refuge in the Dachstein Mountains at 2,741 meters. The tour over the Dachstein suspension bridge with the "Stairway to Nowhere" promises an experience with thrills. A truly uplifting feeling to experience the world from a bird's eye view, but without taking off!

Day 5: Scenic hike across the sunny plateau of Ramsau

Today's day of hiking begins on the Philosopher's Trail, part of the Panorama Trail. The hiking trail leads pleasantly shady along the forest. Again and again, wonderful views of the chalk-pale rock walls of the Dachstein open up. Soon the district of Kulm is reached and with it the church of St. Rupert, the oldest sacred building in the high valley. This is followed by a nature trail on root-rich ground through hilly forest terrain. The Sattelberghütte, which is also very popular with children, invites you to take a break. We continue through a hollow path and then over forest roads to Birnberg, a pretty farming village that already belongs to Haus im Ennstal. The route continues eastwards on comfortable paths until you cross the Enns at the sports centre and reach Haus im Ennstal, which has been awarded the title of "Europe's most beautiful village" since 2014. If you need a refreshment at the end of the day, we recommend the local outdoor adventure pool.
(1 night in Haus im Ennstal)
Hiking: approx. 4 hours (12,5 km, ascent 245 m in height, descent 613 m in height)

Day 6: Varied ups and downs in the upper Enns Valley

Haus im Ennstal is left via the suspension bridge over the Enns and hikes past Weissenbach, slightly ascending to the Sonnberg. If you want to do something good for your body and mind, we recommend the nearby Kneipp facility in Gradenbachtal. The trail continues via the small village of Assach, past the southern flank of the Aichberg. The trail now climbs steeply over the Kunagrünberg with a wonderful panoramic view of the Gröbminger valley basin. Further on, you will come to a section of the Tree Horoscope Trail with interesting information about the close connection between the soul of a tree and the character traits of the human being, based on the "Celtic Tree Circle". The last section of the trail leads via the village of Weyern to the centre of Gröbming, located on a hill overlooking the Enns.
(2 nights in Gröbming)
Hiking: approx. 7 hours (23 km, ascent 800 m in height, descent 800 m in height)

Day 7: Discoveries around Gröbming

The climatic health resort of Gröbming has a varied program of activities on offer. The Friedenskircherl, a 20-minute walk from the 2,000-meter-high Stoderzinken, is one of the most charming, but also much-visited hiking destinations here. If you are looking for a thrill, you can take the zipline from the Stoderzinken down into the valley (payable on site) for the way back. For fans of climbing adventures, the Gröbming Adventure Park could be interesting. It is one of the largest of its kind in Austria and offers a total of 18 courses of varying difficulty that want to be climbed.
A worthwhile hiking destination is the Freienstein, whose summit lies freely in the Enns Valley. Along the hiking trail, several lovingly designed stations, such as the "Peace Bell" and the "Warm View", invite you to pause. The panoramic view in front of the Stoderzinken massif as well as the rock faces of the ridge peak and the view over the Enns Valley is unforgettable.
Hiking Freienstein: approx. 5-6 hours (22 km, ascent 442 m in height, descent 442 m in height)

Day 8: Individual departure

For all those who would like to spend even more time in the Ennstal, additional overnight stays can be reserved. Allow yourself a little more time to reminisce about the many impressions of an eventful week that is now behind you. Our suggestion: visit the spa gardens with graduation facilities and let your breath flow particularly deeply. Otherwise, the individual departure will take place.
