Hiking from the Danube to wine to apricots

 

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage landscape Wachau on foot. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Danube Valley and vineyards. The trails take you to fortresses, ruins and castles and various hillside vineyards – get in touch with the unique history of the Wachau. Cozy Heurige invite you to finish your day in a relaxed atmosphere with a glass of wine and delicacies of the region.

 

General information:

Daily stages are introductory to moderately difficult and are suitable for beginners. A reasonable fitness level and basic hiking equipment like good hiking shoes, rucksack, rain and sun protection, functional clothing and also a warmer jacket or pullover are necessary to enjoy your trip.

Routing:

1st day:   Individual arrival in Krems

The 1000-year-old city Krems charmed with its historical sights, cultural highlights as well as with culinary delights. Krems was declared to be a World Heritage site in 2000.

2nd day:  Krems – Duernstein, ~12 km, 4,5 hrs, altitude difference: á385 m / â391 m

The tour leads through the historic quarters of Krems into the Krems-Valley and Wachau wine terrace where great views await you. Through the old part of Stein you reach the vineyard of Stein with its ruin. Following the old winepaths, you enter the wine growing area Wachau via Pfaffenberg. Along the impressive Ried Loibenberg you reach Duernstein. Return by bus to Krems.

3rd day:    Krems – Weissenkirchen – Spitz, ~11 km, 3,5 hrs, altitude difference ascent/descent: á506 m / â494 m

After a boat ride on the Danube you reach the charming town Weissenkirchen. This stage leads you through unique vineyards. High above the Danube you find the biggest cohesive wine growing area of the Wachau. You walk through romantic dry grasslands, forests and miraculous rock landscapes to the red gate where you enter the wine village Spitz.

4th day:   Spitzer Graeben – Muehldorf, ~11 km, 4 hrs, altitude difference: á487 m / â345 m

Through the imposing side valley of the Wachau called Spitzer Graeben the panoramic way leads you to the hills Tausendeimerberg and Setzberg to Muthstall. Via Niederranner you get to the romantic castle Oberranna and there you follow the creek Rannabach downwards to Kalvarienberg and further to Muehldorf. Return by bus to Spitz at the Danuebe.

5th day:   Spitz – Aggsbach Markt – Emmersdorf, ~15 km, 5 hrs, altitude difference: á611 m / â607 m

By bus you go to Aggsbach Markt. On picturesque ways you walk from Aggsbach Markt via Edelberg to a plateau named Baerenreut. Via Zintring and Felbring you reach the ruin of Gossam and afterwards you follow the historic postman’s track to Moedelsdorf. On an old trade route, the path leads you into the Renaissance village Emmersdorf at the Danube.

6th day:   Emmersdorf – Weiten, ~18 km, 6 hrs, altitude difference: á632 m / â509 m

This day you follow the hiking trail Jauerling-Runde. The stage starts in Emmersdorf and leads you to the castle Rothenhof and to St. Georgen. You follow the way up to Poemling and then downwards to Eitental. Above the Lohsdorfer Hoehe and the Koegelfeld you reach the highest point of the stage, the Spielerkreuz. An old trade route leads you to Weiten. Return by bus to Emmersdorf at the Danube.

7th day:   Emmersdorf – Melk, ~10 km, 3 hrs, altitude difference: á236 m / â231 m

The first part of the stage leads you up to the village Rantenberg. Take the possibility for visiting the observation tower Dachberg and enjoy the fantastic view. From now on, you always walk downwards to the Danube. On isle Luberegg you will soon reach the hydroelectric power station Melk, cross the Danube and enter the old part of Melk city. Overnight stay in Melk.

 

8th day:   Individual departure or additional nights.

Accommodation: Twin-bedded rooms in Austrian resorts are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. These are also known as 'Austrian Twins' and are regarded as two beds. Separate twin beds are rare and cannot be guaranteed as available.

Location of the accommodation mainly close to the trials.

Information for arrivals by car: The parking place does not always situate next to the accommodation but on a public parking place. (Possibly costs have to be paid on spot)

Dogs: Dogs are allowed in the accommodations on request, often for a small fee. Extra costs have to be paid on spot. Austrian law requires that dogs have to be on leash or have to wear a muzzle in public transport.
